Is it Functional or Sterile?

When creating your home it should be from the starting point of asking yourself the question, how do I want my home to feel?.

Most people would agree that returning home to the equivalent of a white box isn’t exactly going to stir in you great feelings of relaxation!, it may be calm but it could seem clinical and far too sterile. For those of us that prefer minimalistic there are many ways to create a more welcoming environment.

A very simple starting point could be something as simple as changing your lightbulbs to warm white, and mixing white shades on the wall, not just using one shade of white. This will prevent the room from feeling too flat. Also by adding texture through various plaster techniques you can create interest to the walls that is unique to your own home.

Clutter is seen as a big NO! NO! these days and to prevent this people often choose to have everything boxed away, but it may be an idea to leave out on display a few specific items that hold memories. For example, family pictures and the odd ornament of your choice to break up the harsh lines.

Incorporating materials and textures such as wood and fabric can help, for example, by using fabric blinds instead of the standard louvre blinds, and by adding a splash of colour you can create a softer and more cozy feel. Perhaps you could choose to incorperate the colours in the blinds into a few scatter cushions for your seating area. having said that it would be advisable to try to avoid getting drawn into making things too matchy matchy, because then it runs the risk of still be perceived as sterile, and orchestrated.

You could try using modern art on your walls to compliment the minimalistic theme, perhaps using earth tones to create a warm vibe. This can also be achieved by using soft warm rugs on the floor to break up the cold look, and make your home feel more snug.

Please remember that a functional home is one that is clean and tidy but can also be cozy, and remember the golden rule our homes should be our sanctuary not a monastery or mausoleum!
